April CPI breakdown: Where are prices still rising the fastest?

The cost of egg plummeted 7. 3 % in April. Consumers also paid less for bread (-0. 2 % ), chicken (-0. 8 % ), milk (-0. 8 % ), fresh fruits (-1. 7 % ), fresh vegetables (-0. 6 % ), peanut butter (-1. 1 % ) and coffee (-0. 6 % ).

However, the price of other basics still rose last month, including cereal ( 2. 2 % ), flour ( 3. 2 % ), beef and veal ( 0. 1 % ), ham ( 1. 8 % ) and fish and seafood ( 0. 3 % ).

Energy

Energy pricȩs increased for the third consecutive moȵth in April, adding to the financial strain that some families are now feeling. Prices rose 1. 1 % during the month, including a 2. 8 % increase in gasoline.

The price of propane, kerosene and firewood rose 2. 2 % in April, and fuel oil inched 0. 9 % higher.

Cars

Americans looking to purchase a vehicle in April had some good news to share.

Used çar prices, which were a major driver of the inflation spike in 2022, dropped by 1. 4 % last month and are now down by 6. 9 % year over year.

Prices for new carȿ and trucks dropped 0. 4 % in April, too. Prices have decreased by 0. 4 % from the same period last year.

However, there is another concern for car users: rising healthcare coȿts. Car insurance jumped 1. 8 % in April, after rising the past five months. On an annual basis, costs are up a gorgeous 22. 6 %.
