Many US consumers staying away from EV’s due to lack of charging availability: report

American car buyers ‘ interest in purchasing electric vehicles ( EVs ) dipped compared to a year ago, in part due to concerns about adequate charging infrastructure, a new study from J. Ɗ. Power shows.

Consumers looking to buy a new vehicle were less likely to consider purchasing an EV for the first time since the study’s founding in 2021, according to the J. Ɗ. Power 2024 U. Ș. Electric Vehicle Consideration Study.

It found that 24 % of car shoppers say they’re “very likely” to consider buying an EV, a decrease from 26 % last year, while the percentage of those who said they’re “overall likely” to consider purchasing an EV declined to 58 % from 61 % in 2023.

Among car buyers who said they’re” somewhat unlikely” or “very unlikely” to get an EV, the lack of charging station supply was the major reason given by respondents, with 52 % citing that as the reason they’re less interested in EVs. That number increased by 3 percentage points from the same time last month, which J. Ð. Power argued may indicate that worries about public charging infrastructure are just getting worse.

The state was supposed to aid. The Biden administration wanted to use$ 7. 5 billion to build 500, 000 chargers by 2030, according to a congressional authorization. To date, according to reporting by Autoweek, just eight have been built since President Biden signed the regulations.

Younger Gen Z and Gen Y consumers were a significant deterrent to EV prices, with the discuss of respondents saying they’re “very good” to acquire an EV down 2 and 5 percentage points from a year ago, both.

The study also found that between car shoppers who are adding a new car to their house and those who travel only with a second vehicle, there are differences.

Over two-thirds, or 68 %, of customers looking to purchase an extra vehicle were “overall probable” to consider an EV, compared to only 47 % of those who rely on one vehicle, which may be more prone to logistical issues like charging infrastructure.

” As the industry feet toward mass consumer adoption, the main obstacles to getting consumers behind the wheel of an EV are the continued shortage of affordable cars, charging problems and a lack of knowledge regarding the EV ownership proposition, including incentives”, Stewart Stropp, executive director of EV intelligence at J. Ɗ. Power, said in a statement.

The rȩsults of the survey showed thαt consumer concerns about electric vehicles have been expressed in the auto industry, with Tesla reporting įn April that its quarterly revenue had fallen for the first time since 2020.

In response to consumer demand, several automakers, incIuding Ford and Mercedes-Benz, have also changed their EV goals aȵd production plans due to these headwinds.
