On Monday’s spread of CNBC’s” Next Call”, Sen. Joe Manchin ( D- WV ) stated that new laws on coal power from the EPA are taking power off the grid at the same time that demand for electricity is increasing.
Host Brian Sullivan asked,” We’re going to need 25- 50 % more light technology to meet our AI and datacenter goals at the minimum in likely 7- 10 years. We’re building out renewable, we’re building out weather, we’re building out power backup. That’s wonderful. However, 90 % of the noxious emissions from coal would need to be captured under these new EPA regulations, which are at least in place or under discussion. I’m sure the coal industry will say, we ca n’t do that or it would be prohibitively expensive. Do you worry that we’ll stop producing energy when we actually need it more?
Manchin answered,” Well, not only am I worried about it, the FERC, the Federal Energy Regulatory]Commission ] and NERC]North American Electric Reliability Corporation], the people who basically evaluate our grid are telling us we’re in a danger zone right now and we’re throwing more demand into]it ] basically and taking off more dispatchable 24/7 power. But, there’s a shift coming. However, you ca n’t replace something you’re dependent on 24/7 with with something better. That’s all. They’re certainly that yet”.
Therefore Sullivan inquired,” But are we violently removing thing than putting things on. “
Manchin responded,” That’s exactly what the authorities have told me”.
Manchin praised the Inflation Reduction Act’s increased electricity generation earlier.
