Gang Shootout Forces Cinco de Mayo Parade to Halt and Relocate, 25 Arrested

Chicago was reportedly pressured to name a halt to its Cinco de Mayo parade and relocate it after gangs opened hearth Sunday just a bit greater than an hour into the annual celebration.

The Daily Mail reports the Chicago Police Department (CPD) responded to the parade that began at 12pm close to Damen Avenue and Cermak Road.

Trouble started quickly after. Video confirmed rival gangs alongside the parade route, flashing indicators from the crowds.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports “shots were fired along the parade route.”

By 1.30pm, CPD introduced that the lengthy working parade was canceled “out of an abundance of caution.”

According to the CPD, the choice to cancel the occasion was made by the tenth District, native officers and parade organizers due to “gang violence in the area.”

However, Fox 32 reports Ald. Byron Sigcho-Lopez (twenty fifth) countered by saying the parade was not canceled however was as a substitute relocated:

In response to the alleged cancellation of the Cinco de Mayo parade within the twenty fifth Ward, we wish to make clear that the occasion was not canceled, however relocated, and was carried out as deliberate with the lively participation of the neighborhood.

The parade happened easily, beginning on Damen Street and persevering with alongside Blue Island till its completion on the intersection of Blue Island and Washtenaw. We thank all of the residents who got here collectively to rejoice this necessary cultural and neighborhood event.

Chicago police stated 25 gang members had been arrested and a few of them had weapons of their possession.

Charges for these in custody are nonetheless pending.
