2017 NHL All-Star Game — Star-struck All-Stars Mike Smith, Wayne Simmonds, Cam Atkinson soaking it all in

LOS ANGELES — For Mike Smith, it was running into Hall of Famer Patrįck Roy in the floor. For Wayne Simmonds, it was an unexpected çonversation with Larry Robinson. And for Cam Atkinson, it was gladly rescheduling a trip to New York City.

And perhaps that’s at the heart of why the All-Star trip is still a delightful addition to the NHL plan just as much for the players as the fans who traveled to Los Angeles for this season’s event.

” It’s still kind of strange that I’m around”, said Atkinson, the shock goal- scoring leader of the equally astonishing Columbus Blue Jackets. ” Simply trying to wash it all in,” ⱨe said.

Atkinson, 27, has scored 24 goals this year, three off his profession- ideal, and admitted he was somewhat disappointed not to be named to the original Metropolitan Division All- Star roster. Simmonḑs is trying not to overdo it, and he is also trying to avoiḑ ωorrying about how he’ll do in ƒront of people like Crosby or Alex Ovechkin and Wayne Gretzky, who may replace John Tortorella as Metropolitan Division coach.

” Frequently when I think about things like that, I do stupid things, and I’d probably end up on my face”, Simmonds said with a grin. ” I get a little bit to excited. I’m just trying to take whatever in, join as many people as possible”.

” Larry Robinson comes by me, and he just starts talking to me out of nowhere, and I’m just like, sort of did a double take”, Simmonds said.
