‘Nothing That Will Deter Us’

Anti-Israel activists show no signs of giving up as more colleges and universities nationwide prepare for the summer break and initiation festivities.

Numerous protesters told Politico that they would not give up even as the summer is upon us and that there is “nothing that did stop” them from continuing to rally as the conflict between Israel and Hamas continues.

There is nothing that can stop us from trying to stop the genocide that is occurring in Gaza, according to senior University of Michigan ( UM) student Ryan Mersol-Gard. This activity is not a flash in the pan, but it is here to stay and we will continue to do so until we achieve withdrawal, as it was the case with the South American anti-apartheid movements in the 1980s and many others.

Pro-Palestinian demonstrations and camps arose on campus of colleges and universities across the country to help a school campus that first erupted on April 17 at Columbia University.

Numerous students were suspended and thousands of demonstrators were detained the day after the first camp first started. A next one was established after the first one at Columbia University was taken down until April 30 when protesters stormed a school building and seized control of a second one.

Numerous colleges have also been sweeping and ensuring the security of the anti-Israel encampments that are surfacing on their schools in the wake of this.

Activists have also begun obstructing school commencement ceremonies.

On Friday, demonstrators at UM interrupted a commencement ceremony for the UM School of Music, Theatre &amp, Dance, carrying Arab colors and signs that read, “ACAB”,” Free, free Palestine”, and “UM Fund Genocide”.

Activists on Saturday interrupted the principal completion ceremony at UM, chanting,” Disclose, sell, we will not stop, we will not sleep”.

One activist and doctoral candidate at the UM, Ember McCoy, said these protests were not “going to decrease down” as there is still mounting pressure “locally, state, and nationwide” to throw “pressure on politicians to respond to Palestine”.

” I do n’t have any expectation that things are going to slow down”, McCoy said. There is legitimate and ongoing pressure on politicians to respond to Palestine, and I hope people are paying attention to a lot that could occur between now and November, both directly and state-wide.

In the aftermath of Hamas ‘ October 7, 2023, attack on Israel, which left 1, 200 people dying and more than 200 people taken as hostages, Israel launched a personal- defense operation in the Hamas- controlled territory of Gaza.

The people of northern Gaza are reportedly experiencing hunger as the Israeli-Hamas conflict continues.

Leaders and ministers of colleges do not think the protests are over, according to Barbara Snyder, the former president of Case Western Reserve University in Ohio and the current president of the Association of American Universities.

According to Snyder,” It is true that our campuses have fewer students over the summer term, so this gives me an opportunity to take a breath. ” That does n’t mean that this is over or that these demonstrations might not continue even in the summer, according to any of our presidents or chancellors, and that is not what I believe any of them to mean.
