Penguins fire assistant coach Todd Reirden after missing playoffs

The Pittsburgh Penguins fired assistant coach Todd Reirden on Friday, just over two months after the team missed the playoffs for the second straight year.

Reirden was in charge of Pittsburgh’s energy play. Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang, and Erik Karlsson were among the star-studded teams that the Penguins struggled with while using the man benefit the entire time. Pittsburgh converted on only 15 % of its energy play possibilities, 30th in the 32- group NHL.

General manager Kyle Dubas stated in a statement that” Mike Sullivan and I have spent time over the past two months evaluating the coaching team. Although these decisions are rarely easy, we both concur that this change was necessary to keep the team moving forward. “

The fire ends Reirden’s second tenure with the business. He served as an aide in Pittsburgh from 2010 to 2014 before moving on to Washington. Before making his NHL debut, he spent two years with the Assets between 2018 and 20.
