University President Speaks Out Against Trans Athletes in Women’s Sports

Houghton University President Dr. Wayne D. Lewis, Jr. spoke out towards permitting transgender athletes to play in girls’s sports activities, calling his opposition a “moral position.”

Speaking to WHAM 1180, Lewis advised host Bob Lonsberry that he can “no longer be silent” in regards to the challenge of transgender athletes in girls’s sports activities.

“This is not a Christian position. It is a moral position. It is wrong to let biological males compete in girls’ and women’s athletics,” Lewis advised Lonsberry. “I reached the place where I could no longer remain silent on this issue…When I see young women with Houghton written across their uniform…at a competitive disadvantage, sometimes losing opportunities that are hard earned, there is no way that I, as their president, will continue to sit on the sidelines and refuse to advocate for change.”

In a written statement, Lewis added that “most Americans” know that trans athletes enjoying in girls’s sports activities is improper.

“Biological males’ participation in women’s athletics is wrong. Most Americans and most of the world know it to be wrong,” he wrote.

He added:

A fringe agenda below the guise of constructing faculty and collegiate athletics extra inclusive for transgender individuals has grown to the place of now unfairly displacing gifted and hardworking feminine athletes, obliterating the historic achievements and information of feminine athletes of the previous, and threatening to dismantle the alternatives and protections for women and girls in sport trailblazing leaders fought so laborious to create and defend. Too many leaders, dad and mom, skilled athletes and folks of excellent may have been silent as feminine athletes are humiliated, silenced and robbed of hard-earned alternatives. That silence is complicit with the perimeter agenda that threatens to dismantle women’ and ladies’s athletics.

He went on to say that permitting males to play amongst girls is a violation of Christian ethics.

I presently serve a Christian college as its president. I consider God has shaped every of us, women and men, with intention and goal. I additional consider intercourse and gender are a divine prerogative and are neither separate from one another nor topic to alter. However, my assertion that organic males’ participation in girls’s athletics is improper shouldn’t be a Christian place. It is an ethical place. While I presently serve a Christian college, most of my profession has been in the general public sector as a trainer, professor, administrator and state schooling chief. If I served in any of these roles once more, my place could be the identical.

Lewis additionally cited historical past to support his stance.

Throughout human historical past and to the current, many of the world and most Americans have upheld the reality that women and men have necessary distinguishing traits. American society is organized based mostly on that understanding. Our group of sport exists based mostly on that understanding. Stating the apparent and extensively supported fact that women and men have necessary organic variations shouldn’t be a place of hatred or bigotry. It is widespread sense. While I consider most coverage makes an attempt to be inclusive of individuals who establish as transgender are doubtless well-meaning, I wrestle to know how leaders with the very best curiosity of women and girls at coronary heart may advocate for or endorse practices that not solely place feminine athletes at a aggressive drawback, but in addition topic them to disrespect and embarrassment and place them at larger threat for harassment and assault.

“Enough is enough. I will not sit by silently as a university president whose female student-athletes step weekly onto tracks, courts, and fields to compete but, in some cases, are forced to do so on playing fields we know to be unfair. I hope you will join me,” he concluded.

The faculty chief obtained a lot support on X for his outspoken and forthright place:
