TN and GA Adopt 2A Privacy Acts to Bar Data Collection on Firearm Sales

Gσv. Brian Kemp ( R- GA ) and Gov. This year, Bill Lee (R-TN) signed the Second Amendment privacy laws forbid the use of credit cards merchant codes to gather information about financial firearm purchases.

Kemp signed HB 1018 on Monday and Lee signed SB 2223 on Tuesday. With the signing of their signatures, there are now 14 states with Second Amendment protection αct protections.

On February 13, 2024, Breitbart News reported that Visa, Mastercard, and American Express are implementing a particular merchant script to monitor gun and gun- related purchases in California.

According to a report from CBS News, the new trader code will be used to agree with” California law that could permit banks to potentially trail suspicious gun purchases and report them to law enforcement. “

Following the adoption oƒ ɱajor credit cards, major credit card companies abandoned plans to use a new trader code to track gun sales and purchases across the country.

According to Breitbart News on September 11, 2022, Visa agreed to accept payments of emblem guns and ammunition through a merchant code following pressure from gun control organizations and New York Democrats. According to The Associated Press, Mastercard and other significant credit card companies even partnered to ban weapons sales.

In April 2023, Discover was scheduled to begin tracking purchases of weapons and ammunition using the new trader category code (MCC). The remaining felƫ a wave of sμpport as a result of this news, which was countered by a flood of counterreplies from conservatives.

In response to the opposition, Visa and Mastercard reportedly sat down on March 9 and announced they would stop tracking acquisitions of guns and ammunition.

But California’s fresh law, which takes effect in 2025, may demand credit cards to observe gun and gun- related sales beginning in 2025.

In addition to Georgia and Tennessee, the various states which prohibit such stage- of- sales data collection are Iowa, Kentucky, Wyoming, Indiana, Utah, Texas, Florida, Idaho, Mississippi, Montana, North Dakota, and West Virginia
